About this course:

This class is designed for artists using a wide range of materials and media in their work, with a focus on sculpture, video and installation. Through critique, writing, research, assignments, guest lectures and Q&A's with Rose Nestler, artists will come away with a reinvigorated artistic practice, attainable goals and better understanding of the inner workings of the art world. Artists will have the opportunity to present their work in person twice throughout the course. During the first critique artists will receive feedback, criticism, support, research suggestions, and class-led prompts or assignments. The second critique is geared toward the outcome of the prompts, assignments and research that was generated during the first crit. All artists will be paired with a writing partner, the focus of this partnership will be writing, editing and honing their artist statements. The class will culminate with a field trip to the studio of Florencia Escudero for a Q&A and conversation in person. Artists will also have the opportunity to meet and hear from Rebekah Chozick, Senior Director at Rachel Uffner Gallery.

The dialogue around the critiques is research driven and peer driven. All artists in the group play a valuable role in giving feedback and suggestions that will respectively help each artist presenting. Artists are expected to come prepared for their critique / presentation with essential questions about their work and thinking to help frame the dialogue for them. Artists are welcome to show works in progress, finished work, painting, drawing, video stills, textiles, mixed media, small sculpture and video. The studio is equipped with wifi and a projector to help facilitate any need for the digital.
