NYC Crit Club is a radical alternative program offering community, connection, and critique to artists post BFA and MFA, as well as self-taught artists. The fundamental mission of the organization is to offer the highest level of critique, dialogue and community support without financial stress and to be as inclusive as possible in all ways. Through our programming we seek to support and strengthen artists’ work while building relationships between artists, gallerists, writers and curators.

The Canopy Program, a year-long mentorship intensive
-
Independent Study Program
-

-
The Plum Lime Residency
-
Artist Lecture Series Club

How did NYC Crit Club start?

The first small iteration of NYC Crit Club began in the Summer of 2017 by Hilary Doyle. A few months later in the Fall of 2017 Catherine Haggarty joined and together the program has grown and evolved organically to meet the demand of artists' needs while maintaining its inclusivity and seriousness. Catherine Haggarty and Hilary Doyle have built NYC Crit Club into a far-reaching project with over 500 artists in our alumni network, hundreds of critics and faculty and specifically designed courses that speak to contemporary issues in art.

What is special about the NYC Crit Club?

NYC Crit Club is run by artists for artists. The range of faculty expertise and experience is strong in both the worlds of academia and exhibitions. NYC Crit Club + Canopy Program faculty teach part time at RISD, Brown University, Purchase College, Rutgers, SVA, and beyond. Our faculty are esteemed artists, curators, and gallery directors that are eager to work in a non-institutional setting with motivated artists. Take a look at our faculty roster! We also pride ourselves on the incredible group of artists, critics, writers, and gallerists we invite each year as Visiting Critics + Guest Speakers, learn more here!

Why should I participate with NYC Crit Club?

NYC Crit Club is what artists make for themselves and offers a range of opportunities and networks that will strengthen your studio practice, lead to new inspiration and connect you with a community of peers, both local + around the world!

We strive to be low cost and are committed to designing programs that allows for flexibility in time commitment, as artists can elect to be involved as much as they can manage and are always welcome to return. Time is a valuable commodity that is not afforded to all - so our programming is angled to support those who are ready, serious and excited to improve while they maintain balance with their studio, work and life commitments. Our programs are designed for the working and serious artist.

Participating with NYC Crit Club is an amazing gateway to community!

Additionally, many artists have grown and used NYC Crit Club as a springboard for success, such as group shows, residencies, or getting accepted into MFA programs. Others have built a portfolio of work towards a group or solo show and have decided perhaps they don’t need or want to attend an MFA.

Since NYC Crit Club is an organization built by artists for artists - there are often exhibition opportunities through our programming. Many members of NYC Crit Club go on to curate exhibitions themselves as well!

Is NYC Crit Club a replacement for an MFA?

We are not an accredited institute and don’t strive to be. We are interested in offering a space for artists post school - be it BFA or MFA. We can’t provide what MFA programs provide in terms of two years of intensive coursework and a studio. However, we provide the same high level of dialogue, faculty credibility and community that one may receive with a MFA program - but without the debt.

What is NYC Crit Club's Diversity and Inclusion Philosophy?

NYC Crit Club values equity and justice for artists of all backgrounds. It is our intent that artists from diverse backgrounds and perspectives be well-served and represented by NYC Crit Club. The diversity that artists bring to courses is viewed with respect as a strength, benefit and asset in our courses. It is our goal to present materials and activities that are inclusive and respectful of diversity: gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, culture, education, and other background characteristics. NYC Crit Club offers financial aid and BIPOC scholarships as part of our commitment to serving artists inclusively.

We also offer scholarships for BIPOC artists in need.

Note: Performance must be shared via video documentation.

What is the Art Career Intensive course?

Art Career Intensive is the perfect course for artists who want to realize their professional aspirations. Each Art Career Intensive is designed specifically with key focuses on topics such as communication, applications + writing, and website/social media presentations, etc. Artists enrolled in this course will be able to share their work + writing for constructive feedback and guidance.

Select Guest Speakers are invited to present talks and provide advice based on their professional experiences. Art Career Intensives are typically online courses hosted via Zoom.

What type of courses are offered in the Seminar + Art History department?

The Seminar and Art History Department was born out of the need to expand on conversations within the critique courses. Over the years, we have noticed that continuing the conversation about major topics in Modernism or art theory were needed. For years we have been expanding the ideas about how to write about art, how to better discuss terms and language within art and how to contextualize history to one’s own work.

The seminars range from theory of Drawing & Painting to intensives on writing and poetry and Queer Art History. All Seminars are led in a way where the artists are working with faculty on selected readings and films to contextualize content. Presentations are given weekly and discussion groups in out-of-class meet ups build relationships and give voice to artists within an open discussion in class.

No seminars or art history courses are pure lectures - as we value and understand the voice of the NYC Crit Club artists. The faculty guides and shapes conversations in an inclusive way to highlight varying degrees of experience and questions within a group setting. The Seminars and Art History courses are ideal for an artist who needs a break discussing their work but seek to further the ideas of their thinking and research within the art historical canon.

Eligibility for Courses

Who is eligible for courses?

Courses are designed for serious visual artists. Participants currently range in age from 22 to 70 years old. Most participants have received a BFA or MFA prior to attending a course. Self-taught artists are welcomed.

For critique based courses, we recommend that all artists have a body of work that exemplifies their dedication to their artistic practice. All participants must be open to the critique process, as that is the foundation of the process.

If you are a curator, writer, and/or gallerist, you are welcome to enroll in an Art History + Writing Seminar course.

Do you need an art degree to participate?

A BFA or MFA degree are not required to enroll or apply. We value experience in the world outside the art academy and understand not everyone might have gotten the chance to study art but can bring unique knowledge in other fields. This is one of the strengths of NYC Crit Club, highlighting diversity in knowledge, experience, age and research.

Is Financial Aid available for courses?

For those in need of payment assistance, we offer Financial Aid & Payment Plans.

In addition, we offer BIPOC Scholarships reserved for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color artists, to receive a discount of 25-50% off the course cost.
