Faculty Mentor Bio

Rose Nestler (b. 1983, Spokane, WA) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and BA in Art History from Mount Holyoke College. Through her striking albeit comical sculptures and video work, the Brooklyn-based artist makes explicit the power, tension and synchronicity that resides in the combined materiality of textiles, stone, wood, silicone and metal. By playing with scale, color, languages of sexuality and humor, and by blending craft-based techniques with historical canons, Nestler subverts our reading of art history and the conventional, often trite, feminine characteristics entrapped within it, presenting their revised, bold forms as attributes for liberty.

Nestler has exhibited in the United States and internationally, including exhibitions at Mrs., Maspeth, NY; Public Gallery, London, UK; König Galerie, Berlin, Germany; Newchild, Antwerp, Belgium; Pangée, Montreal, QC, Canada; BRIC, Brooklyn, NY; Hesse Flatow and Perrotin, New York, NY. She was an artist in residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans in 2022. Nestler has also conducted residencies at The Fores Project, London, UK, and The Lighthouse Works, Fishers Island, NY, among others. Her work has been featured in the Brooklyn Rail, Art 21, BOMB magazine, Hyperallergic, The Art Newspaper, Artnet, and New York Magazine. Nestler is represented by Mrs. in New York and Public in London, UK.
