About this course:

Alternative Frameworks for Navigating the Art World is an online seminar course co-taught by Alex Paik, Artist, Founder and Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a non-profit network of artist-run spaces and organizes Correspondence Archive, an online series of conversations between artists of color, and Natalia Nakazawa, Artist, Educator and Arts Administrator.

In this seminar faculty and artists will read and discuss essays that provide alternative frameworks on how we can navigate an art world that has traditionally excluded marginalized people. We will also look at historical and contemporary examples of alternative spaces and organizations, whose histories are often less visible in the mainstream art world. The course will culminate in artist-led research and presentations on alternative organizations as well as an exercise in creating your own context for your work.

Each class will be recorded for artists to review artist talks and presentations; in addition the chat will always be saved for those wanting to review notes from their presentations.

Artists in this course will:

  • Read essays that provide alternative frameworks on how we can navigate an art world that has traditionally excluded marginalized people

  • Learn more about alternative spaces and organizations outside of the mainstream art world

  • Participate in artist-led research, presentations and lively discussion with faculty + peers

  • Will compile a list of readings & resources which will create context for your own work
