About this course:

This Group Critique course will be conducted at the NYC Crit Club studio space in Bushwick, NY. Artists will present their work to the group and faculty member, Sam Bornstein. The class offers each artist the opportunity to present their work twice to the group and visit the studio of the Guest Speaker.

The first presentation will be an introduction to your work and research to the class. The second presentation will be a longer form critique, about 30+ minutes, depending on class size and schedule. For critique artists will bring in 4-6 pieces of art to the Bushwick Studio for installation and review from Sam Bornstein and peers.

The dialogue around the critiques is research driven and peer driven. All artists in the group play a valuable role in giving feedback and suggestions that will respectively help each artist presenting. Artists are expected to come prepared for their critique / presentation with essential questions about their work and thinking to help frame the dialogue for them. Artists are welcome to show works in progress, finished work, painting, drawing, video stills, textiles, mixed media, small sculpture and video.

*Please Note: The NYC Crit Club studio is located in Bushwick, Brooklyn off the Morgan L. The studio is on the fourth floor and artists must be able to walk up three flights of stairs. Also, we encourage artists to leave class together and/or find a buddy to walk to the nearest train or bus during evening hours. As with any event in the evening artists must understand leaving a night class might occur after dark.

Faculty Bio:

Sam Bornstein (b. 1983, New York; works in New York. MFA Hunter College 2017, BFA Bard College 2005.) Bornstein’s layered figurative paintings evoke an invented world that mirror contemporary life and personal narratives through the filter of the imagined. In alternately luminous and muted light, a variety of characters from New York City, folklore, media, and the collective imaginary coexist in scenes that are familiar, yet resist closed readings. Often portraying multiple figures involved in ambiguous tasks, work, or leisure, his works play with perception of reality and dream states, creating a sense of familiarity that requires the viewer to apply their own experiences in order to complete the narrative. The paintings' tension of material and image often refer back to the act of painting, and recall Postwar and Modernist painters from Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe.
