About This Course
Alternative Beings is an 8-week course inspired by Professor Amir H. Fallah’s focus on nontraditional approaches to identity, the body, and figuration in art. Rather than following conventional techniques in figurative painting and drawing, this course invites artists to explore portraiture by moving beyond direct physical representation. Students will engage with the human figure through symbols, archetypes, and surrogates, challenging traditional ideas of biographical work. This approach encourages a broader understanding of representation, urging artists to create work that pushes the boundaries of figurative art.
Artists Will:
- Participate in a class size of 10 artists max
- Present work twice during the course. The first presentation introduces your practice, while the second reflects progress based on critique and class feedback.
- Receive individualized prompts from Amir following the first critique.
- Attend two virtual artist talks and Q&A sessions, offering opportunities to interact with established artists.
- Redefine portraiture and figuration by exploring historical contemporary perspectives.
- Investigate experimental forms of representation, including sound, video, abstraction, and installation.
- Develop a cohesive body of work that builds on feedback and evolves throughout the course.
- Participate in group critiques and respond to prompts that question traditional ideas about the body, identity, biography, and portraiture.
- Expand their understanding of portraiture and figurative art by engaging with nontraditional materials and perspectives.
- Build a body of work that stretches their approach to representation.
- Gain insights from professional artists and fellow students, enriching their practice with diverse perspectives and strategies.
