Painting Techniques, Demonstrations & Critique

Hosted at our NYC Crit Club studio space in Bushwick, NY; this course will combine focused critiques with a deep dive into painting specific techniques. Artists will present their work twice to the group and to Caitlin Macbride, in order to receive feedback, context and research based prompts.

This course is perfect for those looking to focus more on paint as a material. In class, there will be hands-on demos to learn about creating limited palettes, making paint from pigment (oil, acrylic, watercolor, and egg tempera), and tricks of the trade that help with surface preparation and tailoring your tools to your own painting practice.

Technique focused classes will be interspersed with group critiques classes to help your work grow with a balance of conceptual and material exploration.

Artists in this course:

  • Will come away with a variety of new technical painting skills and more confidence to explore

  • Learn how to make oil, acrylic, watercolor, or egg tempera paint from pigments

  • Learn different skills in surface preparation and receive information on painting mediums, types of brushes, and other tools of the trade

  • Understand how to utilize limited palettes and learn more about color from other painters

  • Gain a conceptual understanding of the way their material connects to their content

  • Receive feedback from critiques from peers and faculty in class
