"Iconoclash: Violence, Histories, Monuments"
This art history course will explore instances of “iconoclash” as a product of public debate and physical opposition to oppressive regimes. Religious, philosophical, political, and ethical disagreements create conflicting histories that often become violent. Such violent, clashing histories play out in public space through destruction, reuse, reclamation, and restoration. Monuments are often sites of such “iconoclash” moments, as iconic representations of dominant, oppressive histories.
Exploring monuments through the term “iconoclash,” this course views images and monuments as sites of political debate, rather than simple objects within the destruction/preservation paradigm usually discussed through “iconoclasm”–– or the belief in a singular narrative of wrongful destruction. The course is thematically driven and focused on special topics around publics, war, colonialism and neocolonialism. We will cover conflicts from the ancient past to the present, including the mono/polythesitic clash during the age of the mystery cult, resistance to French, English and Spanish colonization and contemporary looting and destruction in Ukraine, Syria, and Palestine.
