In Living Color: Pigments in the Past, Present and Future:
“In Living Color” centers on the histories and legacies of color pigments, inks, and dyes, and considers their cultural origins and associations in addition to their physical properties. These color materials - including earth pigments and ochres, minerals like malachite and lapis lazuli, as well as dye materials such as cochineal and indigo - have aesthetic and historical implications that echo into the present day. This course will explore this vast topic in tandem with looking at contemporary artworks that speak to and/or reference color materiality.
While some information will be presented in a lecture format, this course will be largely inquiry based, and will allow for substantial close looking and student-led discussion. In this format participants will be invited to share their own narratives, connections, and observations in discourse with each other. In our discussions we will also be diving deep into specific themes for each week’s class, connecting these ideas to our observations of color symbolism. Themes will include: “etymology and language;" “spirituality;” “race and identity;" “attraction and repulsion;" and “the ethics of nature”, among others.
Artists in this class:
Will learn about historic color materials - including natural pigments, inks, and dyes - and to foster awareness of their impact in the past, present, and future.
Will explore how these histories have echoes in contemporary art practice.
Will foster an inquiry based mindset and encourage critical thinking through slow looking and class discussion.
Set the stage for students to be inspired within their respective art practices and beyond.
Will promote mindfulness through recognizing the materiality in all things.
Will invite students to counter the colonial notion of “linear time” in considering the regenerative life cycles present in the world around us.
