Drawing Towards Abstraction

In this class, Drawing Towards Abstraction artists will develop techniques and methods of drawing both traditional and less traditional. Artists will experience a range of assignments, which have particular parameters and yet will encourage you to make work that is specifically yours. Methods of research towards abstraction will be discussed and demonstrated.

This class is a studio class, where materials are required and suggested to help you fulfil the course outcomes. You will be producing work based on six drawing projects which will be prompted. You will hear lectures by four visiting artists and will be critiqued by one of them. There is one-on-one feedback as well as feedback from peers and visiting artists; critique will happen in some form every time we meet. This class is geared towards developing a robust drawing practice. We are considering drawing as a way to think through visual problems, drawing as a vehicle for planning towards projects in other media and drawing as a practice in itself. Experimentation with materials, ideas, shaking up/challenging established habits of our artistic practices through drawing is at the core of this class.

Artists in this class will:

  • produce six drawing projects

  • learn about methods of researching towards abstraction

  • hear lectures by 4 artists who deal with drawing and abstraction

  • be critiqued by at least one of those artists

  • work with non traditional materials in drawing

  • create work that is abstract, material and specific to you
