When we gather
Canopy Studio, 508 W. 26th St. #6E
November 21-23
OpeningThursday, November 21, 6-8 pm
When we gather is a pop-up Group Exhibition celebrating the work of 10 artists who worked together for one year with their Canopy Mentor, Sara Jimenez, as part of the 2024 Canopy Program. Through their collaborative journey in the Canopy Program, a year-long residency, these artists have fostered critical dialogues and mutual inspiration, further developing their exploration of critical themes including the remembered and forgotten, the sublime, and the fractured.
Working across an array of mediums including sculpture, painting, and printmaking, these artists examine unseen realities through acts of collection, fragmentation, and conjoining. Dante Migone-Ojeda, Dany Green, and Melanie Brewster probe hidden worlds and build new mythologies by reconstructing–sometimes fraught–relationships to religion and spirituality. Jessica Elena Aquino, Gino Romero, and Kaitlin Santoro highlight the invisible, ancestral ties that bind us across time using performative interventions and nontraditional methods of printmaking. Sima Schloss, Christine Zheng, Aaron Cohen, and Siyu Chen employ additive and reductive collage techniques to process our collective reality, exploring the impact of material and emotional accumulation.
By breaking down and reconfiguring concepts, memories, and material, the artists in this exhibition uncover and weave new connections between the tangible and intangible. When we gather celebrates the expansive possibilities of joining together and creating in community.
